Continuing Student Learning - Assessment Update

May 4, 2020 - At Parkland School Division, we wish to acknowledge the many challenges the current situation has presented to both families and school staff. We acknowledge and applaud the extraordinary efforts that parents, students and staff are putting forward on a daily basis as we navigate through this pandemic. Families are having to learn new routines and work together in an entirely new way. School staff are working hard to be flexible, learning about and finding all the different ways for students to access lessons and show their learning. We are grateful for the manner in which everyone has come together to work in the best interest of our students. 

We know that many of you have questions about how students will be assessed for their final grade. We hope that the following will bring clarity to the current situation:

Kindergarten to Grade 9

  • All students who were on track to progress to the next grade level will do so.
  • If the student was on track to pass the course before the move to remote learning, the student will receive, at minimum, a grade of ‘Satisfactory’.
  • If the student’s grade was ‘Insufficient, before the move to learning-from-home, and the student does not sufficiently engage with the learning to improve their grade, it is possible for the student to receive a grade of ‘Insufficient’ for a particular course at the end of the year.
  • Grades may fluctuate up or down.
  • With respect to students in Grade 9, if a student does not sufficiently engage for the remainder of the year, but still receives a minimum grade of Satisfactory, teachers may recommend that the student adjust their course stream for Grade 10.

Grades 10 - 12

  • All students who were on track to progress to the next course level will do so.
  • If the student was on track to pass the course before the move to remote learning, the student will receive, at minimum, a grade of 50%.
  • If the student was not at 50% or greater before the move to remote learning, and does not sufficiently engage with the learning to improve their grade, it is possible for the student to fail the course.
  • Grades may fluctuate up or down.
  • If a student does not sufficiently engage for the remainder of the year, but still receives a 50%, teachers may recommend that the student repeat a course or adjust their stream for the next level. In that event, grade coordinators and counsellors will communicate with families to discuss possible timetable adjustments for next year.
  • For Career & Technology Studies courses, unallocated credits may be applied for those courses where practical or hands-on learning could not take place in the learn-from-home scenario. Unallocated credits cannot be used as pre-requisites for the next level. Students will be assigned the appropriate course level accordingly the following year. 
  • If needed, students will receive up to 15 unallocated credits to meet graduation requirements.
     

We wish to emphasize how critically important it will be for students to participate and engage to the best of their abilities. The more the student engages, the better equipped teachers will be to move the learning forward and to prepare the student for the next level. 

The last day of instruction will be set for Friday June 19, 2020. Classroom teachers will work with students to communicate dates for final projects or assignments so assessment can take place after the final day of instruction.
